Edges list and Add Edge¶
Use the Edges page to see every Edge on your install, check that each one is connected and up to date, and add new Edges.
Read the Edges list¶
Open Edges in the sidebar. Each row is one Edge.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The Edge name. Click it to open the Edge page. |
| Site / Group | Where the Edge sits. It inherits configuration from this group. |
| Online | Online while the Edge is connected to Watchtower, otherwise Offline. Updates live. |
| Agent | The Edge software version it last reported. |
| Last birth | When the Edge last reported in: on every connect and after every accepted configuration change. |
| Sync | Whether the Edge runs the configuration you published. |
| Status | Pending, Active or Deactivated. |
The page has no search field. Narrow the list with the filters: All sites, All groups, All statuses (Active, Pending approval, Deactivated) and All sync states (Not in sync shows Edges that are offline or not In sync).
Status values¶
| Status | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pending | Enrolled with approval required; not active yet. | Approve or reject it on the Approvals page. |
| Active | Enrolled and allowed to connect. | Nothing. |
| Deactivated | Deactivated or rejected by an administrator. It cannot connect again. | To reuse the hardware, add it as a new Edge. |
Sync values¶
An Edge that is not connected always shows Offline, whatever its last result was.
| Sync | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| In sync | The Edge confirmed it runs the latest configuration. | Nothing. |
| Pending | The Edge has not confirmed the latest configuration yet, or has none yet. | Wait about two minutes. If it stays Pending, contact support. |
| Failed | The Edge refused the configuration and kept its previous one. | Hover the cell to read the error, fix the template or override, and save again. |
| Rolled back | The Edge applied the change, lost its connection or a device connection, and went back to the previous configuration. | Fix the change, for example a wrong device address, and publish again. |
| Offline | The Edge is not connected. It keeps collecting data and receives pending changes when it reconnects. | Check power and network at the Edge. See Troubleshooting. |
Hover the Sync cell after every change
If Watchtower cannot build a configuration for an Edge, for example because a variable has no value, the Edge keeps its current one and the cell can still read In sync. The error shows as a tooltip on the cell. Use Preview render on the Edge's Config tab to catch problems first. See Edge configuration.
Add an Edge¶
You need the Owner or Admin role, and a shell with sudo on the gateway host.
- On the Edges page, click Add Edge.
- Choose the Site and Group. The dialog preselects
Default. - Optional: select Require approval before the device is activated. The Edge then waits until an Owner or Admin approves it.
- Click Create command.
-
Click the copy button next to the command, then paste and run it on the gateway host. It looks like this:
The command is valid for 15 minutes and works once
Run it within 15 minutes, on one host. Until then, anyone with the command can enroll a device into your org, so keep it out of tickets and chat. If it expires, close the dialog and create a new one.
Keep the dialog open. The panel under the command updates every 2 seconds:
| Panel text | Meaning |
|---|---|
Waiting for the device⦠|
The command has not run yet, or the host cannot reach Watchtower. |
Waiting for approval⦠|
The Edge waits on the Approvals page. |
Enrolled: <name> |
The Edge is enrolled and connecting. |
Online |
The Edge is connected. You are done. |
This enrollment command has expired. |
Create a new command. |
Approve the Edge¶
If you required approval, open Approvals. The Pending approvals page shows each waiting device with its Site / Group, source IP and the details it sent. Check that it is the host you expect, then click Approve, or Reject to refuse it. A rejected Edge becomes Deactivated.
Confirm the Edge is online¶
The new Edge shows Online, an Agent version and a Last birth time in the list. Sync reaches In sync once it has its group's configuration, and its assets appear on its Assets tab.
Note
Edges waiting for approval count toward your plan's Edge limit. When the limit is reached, enrollment does not complete. See Billing and usage.
Replace or re-enroll an Edge¶
- Retire: on the Edge's Overview tab, use Deactivate. See Edge page overview.
- Replace hardware: add the new hardware into the same site and group so it inherits the same configuration. When it is Online, deactivate the old Edge. To move the old Edge's own overrides and asset history to the new one, contact Privitty support through the channel listed in your Privitty agreement.
- Re-enroll: a deactivated Edge, or one offline for more than 30 days, must enroll again with a new Add Edge command. This creates a new Edge record; deactivate the old one. If the installer reports that the host is already enrolled, contact Privitty support.
